What do greater expectations mean to students who feel that their teachers do not care? People do not care how much we know until we show how much we care. Therefore, we choose only teachers who love their students enough to make a difference in their lives. We must teach to specific learners with their unique learning styles, motives, and objectives. We give people the loving care they need to flourish in a competitive world where leaders are well-educated. We prepare them to dream and achieve.
As small class instructors, we educate students for years at a time -- not just for nine months. Students can't hide in classes of five students. We care more because we know students better. We stay up late at nights to help these students -- frequently for as long as they need and without financial compensation. Other educators may lower their standards; we lessen the difficulties students face to meet high standards. "It is the less-bright students," writes Malcolm Forbes, "who make teachers teach better."
