Admissions
Admissions Policy and Procedures
At The School of Choice, we believe gifted and motivated students should
learn about and follow their own "inner agenda" in order to achieve their
fullest potential. The School of Choice welcomes qualified students of all
races, genders, ethnicities, faiths and creeds. The School of Choice
Admissions Committee accepts students based upon a broad variety of factors
that reflect each student's diverse interests, talents and motivations:
academic ability, tests, writing samples, recommendations, portfolios,
personal interviews and a Qualitative Assessment. The admissions process
involves the following steps.
- Submit Application Form.
Interested parents fill out an application form.
- Interview School Officials.
As a small school, we endeavor to know the abilities, goals and challenges
of each family that applies. Our approach is personal and individual
because we want everyone involved to make the right decision for their
children to enter a viable learning community. Therefore, we place a high
weight upon personal interviews as a measure of preparation and motivation.
- In-school Academic Assessments.
We will also administer our own academic testing that will include a writing
sample as well as math and English problems. This allows us to understand
their academic abilities firsthand and to place students in particular
classes with the consent of the parents.
- Enrollment.
The school's Board of Directors will decide upon enrollment based upon a
combination of all of the factors above. Parents then will be presented
with a contract and offered matriculation. Matriculation may be conditioned
upon certain remedial work (e.g. summer school) and a period of observation
that includes time spent in our classes and a Qualitative Assessment using
the Roeper QA Method.
Newly enrolled students will benefit greatly by visiting a leading
international expert on gifted education, Dr. Anne Marie Roeper
, for an independent assessment during
their first week with the school. She experiences the whole child through
"observation of verbal and non-verbal clues, intuition and information from
parents and schools." the emotions and motivations that can lead children to
spiritual, emotional and scientific progress. Plan to set an appointment
with her at (510) 235-3173 to find out more about your child's diverse
talents.
If a student proves unsuitable during the conditional period of enrollment,
a full refund minus the expenses of testing will be granted. In most cases,
students will be welcomed permanently into the learning community.
